A Chance to Grow was founded in 1982 by a group of parents looking for a better chance for their disabled children. Today it is a professionally staffed health care agency, governed by a board of directors and subject to state and federal guidelines.
We Believe all children are born with innate abilities and that each deserves a chance to grow to his or her highest potential. Our first priority is eliciting the normal course of brain and body development. Adaptive devices or institutionalization should be considered as a last resort.
Our "product" is better children, youngsters equipped with the skills they need to lead them toward independence. A child with cerebral palsy needs activities that promote crawling, creeping and walking. An autistic child needs help integrating information coming in through the senses. And a failing reader in second grade can improve with practice in eye-hand coordination.
A Chance to Grow uses an eclectic approach in developing individual programs for each child. Our staff of multi-specialists borrow from any discipline that works. After thorough evaluation of needs and abilities, a child's schedule may include, for example, sensory integration, physical or speech therapy, Montessori techniques, osteopathic treatment, direct instruction and fundamental education.
