A Family AffairLinda Nesenson has been part of A Chance To Grow’s family – and we’ve been part of hers – since 1994. Her journey mirrors ours, as this story demonstrates. Linda’s second son, Matthew, born in 1988, began having issues with focus and hyperactivity as a toddler. By the time he was in kindergarten, the impact was obvious: “He was so overwhelmed with everything that was going on,” remembers Linda, “he would just laugh and laugh, he didn’t know what to do. He would go full force and conk out.” He was so disruptive to the class, he spent half the day in the hallway on a chair because they didn’t know what to do with him.

Different ways of knowing,
Different ways of growing
A Chance To Grow provides a wide range of services designed to help people at all levels of ability reach their optimal growth. Our focus on brain function affords us the opportunity to offer many approaches that are designed to complement each other and improve quality of life. One family has been with ACTG since its beginnings, and their journey with us – beginning with Boost-Up, the program that is the basis for most of our programming, to clinical services, to PCA services. Their story provides insight into the impact of everything we do.
Michelle Schutt first brought her son Scott, who has serious developmental delays, to Boost-Up when he was 11 years old. Doctors had been unable to tell her what was causing his delays, and their prognosis for him was bleak. She heard about Boost-Up from a friend. “I’m the kind of parent who thinks ‘okay, he is what he is’ but if I can find something to help him that’s not intrusive, okay.” While Scott participated in the program, she availed herself of the resources in our Kretsch Library, named for a family whose son had serious head injuries and who devoted their lives to finding research that could help him. Her reading showed Michelle that there were alternatives to the Special Education teachers who she felt were “not helpful” for her son. “My understanding is that they don’t have much training in brain-based approaches.” After observing its benefits, she became a Boost-Up teacher. |
When ACTG began to explore the use of neurofeedback, a brain-training approach, Michelle was excited, and before long, she launched what became our Neurotechnology Program.

SMART Steps for
Family Child Care Providers
We are excited to introduce S.M.A.R.T. Steps - a pilot project designed to bring the S.M.A.R.T. program to Family Child Care providers. This new program will provide children ages 0-5 years with fun, play-like activities that promote natural, healthy brain development, making them ready to succeed in school. The activities are designed to be low-cost and easy to implement in any setting. |
Generous funding from Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation and the Otto Bremer Trust has allowed the necessary planning for this new program. We recently began training Family Child Care providers from Brown County, MN, and plan to offer additional opportunities in the coming months for new providers to experience the S.M.A.R.T. Steps program - stay tuned!

“As a kid, I had a harder time reading,” says Leah, a veteran educator currently with the Eau Claire, WI school district and a long-time S.M.A.R.T. advocate, whose passion for teaching and love for her students are palpable. “And I want to do everything in my power to prevent others from struggling.”

Her first teaching experiences with 4th and 5th grade bi-lingual students, convinced her that early education was where she belonged: “My highest reader was at a 2nd grade level and the rest of the students were at pre-primer. I needed to be somewhere where I could make a difference before these kids even start to learn how to read. So, I moved to kindergarten the following year, which was perfect because then I could give them a solid foundation.” >> Keep Reading |

"Now I'm in Tune" - Kevin's Story Kevin, 23, exudes calm energy, the kind that comes from knowing who you are and what you can do. But it wasn’t always like that. It began in middle school. “I had trouble, where I’d be working, trying my best, and not receiving the results, with testing, homework, stuff like that.” It affected every part of his life: he began to struggle academically, particularly with math and science. Sports had been his outlet, but he felt that somehow he could not reach his full potential. Even social interactions became difficult. “I felt burnt out, just tired.” |

Update on ACTG's 30th Annual Race for the Children
We’re sad to announce that we have had to cancel our annual Race for the Children at Canterbury Park, which was scheduled for August 16, 2020. In order to keep patrons safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, Canterbury Park has greatly reduced its racing schedule and limited the number of people who can attend. This has led to a cancellation of Sunday events, including ours. We’ll miss you this year, but we will see you soon. The race will run next year, renamed the Bob DeBoer Race for the Children, in honor of our late founder, who loved this event and Canterbury Park.

Dr. May will continue Dr. Moroz’s tradition of dedicated service to children and adults, and build on it with new vision therapy services. Due to the transition, we are not offering vision services at the moment, but the clinic will offer eye exams, prescriptions, and glasses as well as new developmental vision services. Watch for announcements! |

Summer workshops – REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
Summer is on everyone’s mind, and for the MLRC that means summer workshops. It may be our 2020 summer workshops will be affected in several ways by the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our participants, presenters, and community are our top priority. While we continue to assess what our options may be for the summer, we will follow all recommendations and guidelines of the state health departments of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Still, we realize educators and school districts need to plan so we are announcing our current dates for summer workshops. In doing so, we have implemented a new registration policy.

ACTG Presents at the 2020 Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health Conference
Kelly Pittman, director of Neurotechnology at A Chance To Grow, was a featured presenter at the MACMH Conference this past April. Her presentation, title "Beyond Talk: Strategies for Calming the Brain and Trauma-Induced Behavior," explores how electrical energies influence the brain and emotions, why trauma is so complex, and how to rewire the brain into a state of calm with brain-training and in-home strategies. |
The event was changed over to an online conference and is a great resource for parents, therapists, social workers, and medical staff. Please follow us on Facebook to keep updated as to when the recorded seminar will be available on our website.

What our clients are saying... "We were in the process of getting an IEP for my son because he was not able to complete his homework at night. It was frustrating and we tried everything. After a couple weeks of neurofeedback, my son started doing homework on his own, and we didn't need to start an IEP! The changes from this program were more noticeable than any other program we have tried." - Mom of 11-year-old with sensory processing disorder |

Building Good Futures
Here's the story of Jillian, a teen parent with two children at Turnquist Child Enrichment Center, who utilized the Teen Parent Transportation Program to change her and her children's lives.
"Jillian had just entered high school when she learned that she was going to be a mother. At 14, she was overwhelmed at the idea of being a single parent.
She told herself, “I’m going to stay in school. I’m going to get this done.” She attended classes for a few months, but a complicated pregnancy and unstable living situation made it nearly impossible to focus on her studies. Like so many teen parents, she had to drop out to care for herself and her child."

“It’s a holistic approach to help children reach their full potential,” says Patrick Dreher, a Developmental Adaptive Physical Education Teacher in the Robbinsdale district and instructor of the Boost-Up Plus program. “We work on building automatic responses in the brain, like balance, hand-eye coordination and cross-lateral skills through our ever-changing course of activities. As these abilities become more automatic, students are more likely to absorb and retain the information being taught in the classroom, because they are more prepared to learn.” > Click here to continue reading |

As such, ACTG’s Vision Clinic will be temporaily closed until new staff can be hired and trained. ACTG is happy to provide referrals to other clinics and practitioners if you or a loved one is in need of vision services.

Jo Gascoigne: A Special Educator
Since our founding more than 35 years ago, A Chance To Grow has relied heavily on the generosity of volunteers to sustain the growth of our organization. As the number and complexity of services grew, so too did the need for volunteers with diverse skills. ACTG’s cutting edge new therapeutic techniques attracted many professionals to support our worthy cause. One individual who saw the benefits of ACTG’s mission was Jo Gascoigne.
Jo began her illustrious academic career in 1958 as a physical education teacher in Mankato. She moved up to Minneapolis and began teaching at North High School and next moved to Wayzata where she served as a physical education teacher and trainer for elementary teachers.
