Continuous rolling is a vestibular activity, moving fluid in a semi-circular canal of the auditory nerve. Vestibular neuron activation heightens auditory discrimination abilities(prep for phonetic reading) and paying attention/alertness. Rolling also provides mobility for emergencies that require avoiding projectiles or falling debris. The "Stop, Drop and Roll," for clothing afire is a standard school safety skill. Although rolling is the first mobility skill in infancy, rolling in school is not an attempt to go back to an infancy stage and is not "babyish." Rolling is part of military training, as is crawling.
