The following information will help you explain the S.M.A.R.T. program to parents and foster a strong school-home connection in a developmentally meaningful way.

How do S.M.A.R.T. activities boost my child’s development?
The S.M.A.R.T. program offers activities that might seem similar to other schools and childcare centers. But, it's unique because it uses the latest brain research and developmental programs to create a purposeful, enriching environment. It provides more opportunities for specific brain stimulation than what occurs routinely in normal child development.

How can you add to your enriching environment at home?
  • Balance - Add space and time for your children to work on their balance. Using the edge of a rug or lines in your flooring as a “balance beam” for them to walk slowly across builds balance and body awareness. This boosts their ability to be still and remain seated when required.
  • Spin - Put your child in your desk chair and give them a few spins. No chair, no problem. Most children find spinning around to be a game. This activity provides the brain with loads of information about where the body is in space. Learning where the body is during movement helps to build up the stamina and endurance needed for stillness, a high form of balance precision.
  • Jump and Hop - Each of us relies on a system in our body that helps us to be aware of our movements. It is called the proprioceptive system. This system is fundamental to our daily activities, movement control, and overall well-being. Jumping and hopping help develop that system because our muscles, bones, and joints are stimulated and send more information to the brain. Have your child jump and hop to practice their spelling words. Lay out ABC cards or numbers cards and have them hop to the one you call out. This system will help your child’s brain learn how much force to use when writing, how to remain upright in a chair, and how to have a healthy posture.

These typical childhood movements play a crucial role in obtaining valuable sensory information that allows us to interact with our environment and perform daily tasks effectively and safely.

P.S. - It is still good for your brain, too :) Give it a try. Connect with your child in a fun, active way while stimulating both of your brains.
